Travel to the Olde English District to find true Southern hospitality, plantation homes, Revolutionary War and Civil War history and South Carolina's ONLY nationally recognized Indian Tribe. This seven county area is one of the South Carolina's eleven tourism regions. The Olde English District's name was chosen because of the similarity to British town names (e.g. Chester, Chesterfield, Lancaster, York) and because so many Revolutionary War battles were fought in the area.

You can visit over 31 artists' studios and watch the artist at work. Delve into African-American History, including a visit to Cheraw, the hometown of Jazz great, Dizzy Gillespie. Follow the Cotton Trail and see the plantations that cotton built. See where the British had their greatest victories and biggest defeats during the American Revolution. Canoe one of our rivers and see up close the world's largest collections of Rocky Shoals Spider lilies, which root in water, around rocks. When they're in bloom in May and June, it looks as if someone tossed a lace blanket across the river. Or just relax, sit on a front porch at a Bed and Breakfast and rock awhile. We'll treat you like an old friend in the Olde English District.

Cherokee Indians lived in this region long before the American Revolution. It was the Cherokee's choice to side with Great Britain during the war for independence, which led to the loss of their land in what is now the northwest corner of South Carolina.
