Time
South Carolina is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone (EST). It is five hours behind the United Kingdom and six hours behind Germany. Currency Exchange US banks provide easy access to money machines throughout the Upstate. Major businesses will accept travelers cheques in US currency. Taxes There is no VAT (Value Added Tax) in South Carolina. South Carolina has a 5% sales tax that is added onto the cost of an item at the time of purchase. Some areas have an additional 1% local sales tax. These taxes are added to the cost of an item at the time of purchase. Rates for hotels and rental cars are often quoted without the rental tax included. Ask for the tax rate when making your reservation. |

Climate The Upstate area of South Carolina enjoys moderate temperatures year round. Peak seasons vary depending on activities. The peak season for white water rafting is during the summer (May through September) when the average temperature is 30 c. Fall foliage is best enjoyed mid October through November. The spring and fall months offer a pleasant climate. Average temperatures during the spring (March & April) and the fall (October & November) range from 17 c - 20 c. The winter months can be cold by Upstate standards with temperatures about 12 c. Snow is sometimes possible but a rare occurrence. |

| Transportation
You will need a valid passport for travel to the United States. US Airways and Delta Ar Lines both operate direct flights from the United Kingdom and Germany to airports in neighboring states with connecting service to Greenville/Spartanburg Airport. The Charlotte/Douglas International in North Carolina and the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport in Georgia are both easily accessible to the Upstate. The most convenient way to travel the Upstate is by a rented automobile. Most major automobile rentals companies have locations at the above airports. Visitors must be 25 years old and must posses a valid driver’s license to rent an automobile. Insurance can be purchased at the time of rental. |

Located throughout the state on the major highways are South Carolina Welcome Centers. The centers are open from 9 am until 5:30 pm daily for visitor information.
